Does brain training work? What the science actually says
You'd expect a brain-training site to say yes. The truthful answer is more interesting: practice reliably makes you better at the skills you train — and the industry's bigger promises have repeatedly failed scientific scrutiny. Here's the evidence, both directions of it.

The short answer
Two findings survive every major study and review of cognitive training. First: training works on what you train. Practice a memory task and your span on that task grows; practice a reaction task and you get faster. These gains are real, measurable, and often durable. Second: evidence that those gains transfer broadly — to IQ, to everyday cognition, to “keeping your brain young” — is weak, and the strongest reviews find little or none. Everything else is detail. But the detail is a genuinely good story.
The experiment that started the fight
In 2010, researchers teamed up with the BBC to run one of the largest training experiments ever conducted: 11,430 adults trained online for six weeks on reasoning, memory, planning and attention tasks. The result was clean and brutal — participants improved on every single task they practiced, yet showed no transfer to untrained tasks, even ones that were cognitively very similar.[1] “Brain training” as a product category never fully recovered from that paper’s one-two punch: practice effects everywhere, transfer nowhere.
Two open letters and a $2 million settlement
By 2014 the scientific community was openly split. In October, about seventy researchers signed a consensus statement declaring that brain-game marketing claims were “frequently exaggerated and at times misleading.“[2] Two months later, over a hundred other scientists signed a rebuttal arguing that a substantial body of evidence does show certain training regimens can generalize to everyday life.[3] Both letters are worth reading — it’s rare to watch a field argue in public this directly.
The regulators were less ambivalent. In January 2016 the US Federal Trade Commission charged Lumosity’s maker with deceptive advertising — the company had suggested its games could stave off age-related cognitive decline and boost performance at work and school without competent evidence — and settled for $2 million.[4] That case is why serious sites in this space are careful about what they promise, and why we are too.
What the definitive review found
Also in 2016, seven researchers published what remains the most thorough review of the field: they examined every study cited by the brain-training industry itself — over 130 papers. Their conclusion maps exactly onto the two findings above: extensive evidence that training improves performance on the trained tasks, less evidence for closely related tasks, and little evidence for distantly related tasks or everyday cognition.[5] Meta-analyses of working-memory training specifically reach the same verdict: reliable short-term gains on trained-task-like measures, no convincing far transfer.[6] And a 2019 “meta-analysis of meta-analyses” across training paradigms found that far-transfer effects shrink toward zero once you control for placebo effects and publication bias.[7]
What actually holds up
None of this means training is pointless — it means the honest claim is narrower and, we’d argue, more motivating. Trained gains are real and can last: in the ACTIVE trial, older adults who trained reasoning and processing speed still showed measurable advantages on those trained abilities ten years later.[8] And one domain stands out from the pack: spatial skills. A meta-analysis of 217 training studies found spatial training produces solid gains that persist and — unusually for this field — transfer to untrained spatial tasks.[9] We wrote about that separately in our mental rotation deep-dive.
Where that leaves a site like this one
Mind Dojo doesn’t promise IQ points, and it never will. What it offers is the part the science unambiguously supports: genuinely hard skill games where practice makes you measurably better — with levels, belts and leaderboards that make the improvement visible. Sequence memory, rule-shifting, precision reaction, object tracking, mental rotation: eleven games, each a trained skill you can watch yourself get better at. That’s not a loophole in the research. That’s the finding.
