Spatial Reasoning Games
Mental rotation — seeing an object turned before it turns — is a cornerstone of spatial reasoning, and the one cognitive skill with the strongest evidence that training genuinely helps.
Void Runner does it in 2D at speed: walls rush toward you with a cutout, and you rotate your shape 90° at a time to fit through before impact. Mirror Axis poses the full 3D judgment from classic spatial research: two polycubes side by side — is one a rotated copy of the other, or its mirrored twin? Mirror pairs can't be told apart by any single feature; you have to turn the shape in your head.
The games
Void Runner
2D mental rotation under time pressure. Fit your shape through approaching walls before they slam.
Mirror Axis
Two polycubes side by side. Is one a rotation of the other, or its mirror? Trains 3D mental rotation — the spatial skill measured in IQ batteries.
What the science says
Spatial skills stand out in the research: a large meta-analysis of training studies found that practice improves them durably, with gains that transfer to untrained spatial tasks — and adolescent spatial ability predicts later STEM degrees and careers over and above math and verbal scores. Of all five disciplines, this is the one where the trainability evidence is strongest.
